New Teeth, Even After Extensive Bone Loss

Bone Grafting Is The Solution

If you’re eager to regain your smile through dental implants but have suffered significant jawbone loss, you don’t have to settle for living with missing teeth!  Through bone grafting, Dr. Eric Baker and Dr. Tim Betita can restore your jaw and create a firm foundation for your implants to be placed, right here in our Dana Point, CA office. Dental implants are critical because they act as your teeth roots and stabilize your jaw in place of your natural teeth. Healthy teeth provide the stimulation your jawbone needs to stay strong. If you’re missing teeth, your jawbone can start to deteriorate quickly. In fact, in less than a year you can lose up to 50 percent of the bone required for implants! Prevention is the key to maintaining a full, healthy jawbone. When you lose a tooth, either through an accident or by extraction, we strongly recommend that you have bone graftingdone as quickly as possible. In fact, you can have a bone grafting procedure during the same visit as a tooth extraction. By doing this, you may never need another bone graft!

Bone grafting is when we take bone material from a part of your body or a donor source and use it to build up sufficient bone volume in your jaw to enable us to place dental implants. If you have missing teeth in the upper-posterior portion of your jaw, your sinus may sink as the bone shrinks. In these instances, we’ll perform a sinus lift, where we place bone graft material underneath your sinus cavity, again with the goal of building up enough bone to support your dental implants. If you’ve suffered an extreme level of bone loss, you may need more complex measures to restore your bone. In these cases, we perform a ridge augmentation, using bone grafts to bring back the natural shape of your jaw. By creating a smooth jawline, we can stabilize your dental implants for years to come.

Healing Begins With Your Own Body

While we use a variety of advanced tools and technology to perform bone grafting, we get the most important component from you. We use the growth factors your body already naturally produces to help you heal and develop healthy bone and gums. This involves using a combination of platelet-rich fibrin—a concentrated form of growth factors from your own blood—and platelet-rich plasma. We start by drawing a small amount of your blood and spinning it at a specific speed in a centrifuge. This separates out the different layers in the blood. Isolating the layer rich in growth factors, we place it back into your surgical site to promote healing. Nothing heals you better than your own body! Expect the post-bone grafting healing process to take from four to six months.
